A Tribute to Lane Venardos by Jeff Fager

Good morning, everybody. It is wonderful to see this hall so full as we gather to pay tribute to our dear friend Lane. Karen, I know how difficult this sudden and unexpected loss has been for you and your entire family. I hope today brings you some comfort as you see and hear just how much Lane meant to so many of us. I was 28 when I first started working with Lane. He was the executive producer , and I was scared to death. Working on the evening news was already intimidating back then. The expectations seemed high, and the producers were accomplished and professional. Within a few days of starting the job, I was crashing a Ray Brady piece with Tommy Miklas when Lane walked into the room with five minutes to go before air and began doing a perfect imitation of a stopwatch ticking away. I remember the sweat forming on Tommy's face. I remember being mostly amazed because it sounded so much like a real stopwatch, only better. A Tribute to Artie Bloom by Jeff Fager

There was not a religious bone in his body, but Artie felt blessed by the life he had. He was a happy man. He had a wonderful family, a job he loved, and more friends than he ever realized. There is a quote I think about whenever I think of him, though I cannot remember who said it: "Don't fear death, fear the unlived life." Artie had nothing to fear. He was good at many of the things he did. He was exceptionally good at two of them: directing television broadcasts and living life. I am not surprised to see how many people have come here today, but he would have been. I know that you, Marla, Scott, and Jill, have been surprised by the size and dedication of Artie's Army. By now, you know how deeply we loved him and how much we miss him bursting into our lives every day. I think “bursting” is exactly the right word. He never walked into a room. Good morning. On behalf of Shirley and the rest of the Wershba family here today, thank you all for being here. And to everyone from CBS News, we have gathered to honor one of the most important people in our organization, and one of the finest men ever to walk our halls, Joe Wershba. Joe had many talents, but above all, he was a true writer. He was a master of understatement, something that became part of the CBS style. Still, when it comes to his contribution, there is no way to overstate it. Joe was one of the founding fathers of CBS News and one of the original producers of 60 Minutes. Everyone in our organization should know what Joe and Shirley did with Murrow and the team that stood up to McCarthy. Without their courage, this country might have taken a very different path.
